Credit by Industry Training

Students may demonstrate college-level competency and earn college credit by submitting documentation of professional certifications or licenses earned, industry or military training completed, or relevant work experience.

Students should first review course descriptions in the current BSC Catalog and consult with their academic advisor to determine whether their prior learning aligns with their program of study and degree requirements. Â鶹ÊÓƵ advisor can assist in identifying BSC courses that may be appropriate for prior learning assessment (PLA).

After identifying potential courses, students must contact the PLA Office at bsc.priorlearning@bismarckstate.edu to confirm that the course is available for PLA evaluation and discuss the appropriate assessment method and documentation requirements.

For industry training to be evaluated for college credit, students must provide sufficient documentation for BSC faculty to compare the training with the objectives, learning outcomes, content, rigor, and assessment requirements of the corresponding BSC course. Documentation should include, when applicable:
  • A copy of each certification, license, certificate of completion, or credential earned.
  • Â鶹ÊÓƵ complete training curriculum, syllabus, or course outline.
  • Course or training descriptions.
  • Learning objectives and expected outcomes.
  • A detailed list of topics and competencies covered.
  • Â鶹ÊÓƵ number of instructional, laboratory, or hands-on training hours completed.
  • Training dates and the name of the training provider or organization.
  • A description of how learning was assessed, including examinations, skills demonstrations, performance evaluations, projects, or other assessments.
  • Assessment results, scores, or verification that all required competencies were successfully demonstrated.
  • A letter from the employer or training provider verifying successful completion of the training.
  • Any additional documentation demonstrating that the training was completed at the college level.
A certification, license, or completion certificate alone may not provide enough information to determine whether the training is equivalent to a BSC course. Students are responsible for obtaining detailed curriculum and assessment documentation from the employer, training provider, licensing organization, or certifying body. Incomplete documentation may prevent BSC from completing the evaluation or awarding credit.

Students seeking credit for energy-related training or coursework should request detailed training documentation from their employer or training provider and include copies of all certifications or credentials earned.

Students whose prior learning has been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) should request that an official ACE transcript be sent directly to Â鶹ÊÓƵ at bsc.priorlearning@bismarckstate.edu for review.

Students must review the Credit by Industry Training Operational Procedure and complete the applicable PLA application form. Â鶹ÊÓƵ completed application and all supporting documentation must be submitted to the PLA Office at bsc.priorlearning@bismarckstate.edu. Submission of documentation does not guarantee that credit will be awarded.
